Periodization Training for Sports

Periodization are designed exercises and techniques that promotes long-term performance improvements. Personal Trainers implement these techniques with variations of intensity, frequency, volume and pressure within certain training cycle.

Using nonlinear and linear programming, modifying variables to optimize performance with overload training.

Periodization is commonly applied and designed to prepare for competition, with performance peaking at the most competitive times in the season.

Periodization Cycles

  • Macro- cycle training lasting 1 year to 4 years. Typically one competition season.
  • Meso- cycle training lasting 2 to 4 weeks with specific programming goals and different meso-cycles to optimize performance.
  • Micro- cycle training lasting 1 to 4 weeks, the shortest training cycle focusing on daily and weekly training.

The goal is to maximize your gains while reducing risk of injury and staleness of the protocol over the long term.

Periodization phases and goals

  • Basic strength is the ability to lift/move weight while exercising at high intensity ranging from 80 to 90% of 1 repetition maximum.
  • Applying proper bio-mechanics and ability to move weight efficiently with high intensity and proper approach reaching high intensity from 75 to 95% of 1 repetition maximum of an exercise.
  • Muscle fiber growth with muscular endurance sustaining long-term repetition, exercising at a lower to moderate intensity from 50 to 75% of 1 repetition maximum.
  • Reaching peak performance, focusing your exercise program on very high intensity above 90% with low volume.
  • Maintaining strength and preserving muscle gains that you acquired exercising, moderate intensity and moderate volume.

Joe, I have been wanting to tell you that I never dreamed to be sitting down with the PROS and exchanging words, especially about a subject that I like, for once in my life, being at the academy, I felt so good, not only did I learn so much more than I have ever learned from other certifications, but I had a lot of fun learning. Especially when it got to the practical application, you guys know what you are doing. No one taught this before like you do. I do have other certifications under my belt and they are going to end up in the garbage, what a waist of money and time, I cannot wait to see you again next Saturday, I am so excited. Please tell Mike Sable that we love his lecture. I know this is for six weeks but I wish I can come to the academy every week, it is so great.
